Random Question (October 22, 2013)

Q. Six thousand of these papal medals issued by the Italian State Mint to honour Pope Francis have had to be recalled. The medals feature a portrait of Francis on one side and on the other, an image depicting the story of Jesus and the publican surmounted by a Latin phrase which means "Jesus, therefore, saw the publican, and because he saw by having mercy and by choosing, He said to him, 'Follow me'". Why did they have to be recalled?

A. Because the word 'Jesus' was misspelt 'Lesus'.

  2. Like Bertie Wooster, I'm proud of my scripture knowledge, so let me answer this: Where it should say, "vidit ergo Jesus publicanum", it says 'Lesus', giving the name of a minor Excise Inspector from Galilee.

Actually, it says LESVS, for these Romans were awful spellers.

  3. Annie, if you examine the latin script on the medal closely , you will find that the 'J' in Jesus has been spelt with an 'L'.
